Union Land Office

Bangladesh is an agricultural country. Agriculture is one of the main sources of national income and the livelihood of nearly two-thirds of the people. Therefore, the importance of land and water resources in this country is immense. Land is the basic natural resource which is the main source of food, industrial products, luxury, health protection materials etc. But due to population growth, unplanned use of land, this important resource of ours is decreasing day by day. Along with the economic progress, the trend of urbanization is increasing, the extent of industrialization is gradually increasing, the amount of land per capita is gradually shrinking due to the continuous expansion of roads, hospitals, educational institutions. Utilization of this important resource is largely dependent on proper planning. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure the proper use of these natural resources and the best use of limited land through a proper planning and policy. In this regard, land use policies have already been formulated from the ministry of land. A full-fledged ministry was formed to carry out all the tasks related to land after the independence of Bangladesh in 1971 through the great liberation war under the leadership of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. At present Directorate of Land Records and Survey, Land Reforms Board, Land Appeal Board, Land Administration Training Center and Comptroller of Accounts (Revenue) Department are functioning under Ministry of Lands. Commissioner at divisional level, Collector at district level (district administrator), Assistant Commissioner (land) at upazila level, Union land assistant officer (tahsildar) at union level are engaged in performing land related tasks. The Ministry of Lands works in the areas of land development tax and revenue collection, special land management and settlement, watershed management, land acquisition and possession, land record and survey and training of land related officers/employees. Also, land development tax collection through banks, land law and rule making in public interest, reform activities and rehabilitation of landless scattered communities, land zoning activities, provision of Khasami settlement among the landless under char development and settlement project, construction and repair of upazila and union land offices, land records Development activities such as modernization i.e. providing land related services to the public in the shortest possible time are carried out by the Ministry of Lands.
